An Associated Press photographer received facial cuts that required 12 stitches and his left eye was swollen shut as the result of an altercation at the end of the Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield heavyweight championship fight.
Douglas C. Pizac, 38, who is based in Los Angeles, said he was climbing onto the ring apron at the Thomas & Mack Center moments after Bowe defeated Holyfield on Friday night when Bowe’s manager, Rock Newman, stepped on his head and shoulders while getting into the ring to celebrate.
Pizac said he told Newman to “watch it,” and said the manager responded by punching him on the forehead. Pizac said Newman threw several more punches, then an unidentified member of Bowe’s corner hit him, causing the cuts and swelling around his eye.
“I never touched him,” Newman said.
