BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Sooners Score Later to Tie Oklahoma State

Scott Blanton kicked a 27-yard field goal with no time remaining to give Oklahoma a 15-15 tie with Oklahoma State at Stillwater, Okla., Saturday and stretch the Sooners’ unbeaten streakagainst the Cowboys to 16 games.

It was the first tie in the series since 1942, when neither team scored.

Lawson Vaughn kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:19 left to give Oklahoma State, 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Big Eight, a 15-12 lead.

The Sooners (5-3-2, 3-1-2) moved downfield without any timeouts to set up Blanton’s kick. Oklahoma got a break when the kickoff after Vaughn’s field goal went out of bounds, the Sooners getting the ball at their 35-yard line.

Cale Gundy, showing no signs of rust after missing the past two games with a shoulder injury, had consecutive completions of 10, 20 and 19 yards to move Oklahoma to the Cowboys’ 16 with a minute left.

Gundy threw an incomplete pass into the end zone, scrambled for a five-yard gain and handed off to Dewell Brewer for a one-yard gain before Blanton made his kick.

Gundy completed 17 of 28 passes for 236 yards, although he had two passes intercepted.

Oklahoma State’s Gary Porter completed 13 of 18 for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Missouri 27, Kansas State 14--Jeff Handy threw three touchdown passes and the Tigers broke a five-game losing streak by downing the Wildcats in a Big Eight game at Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers (2-8, 1-5), whose only other victory in 10 games this season was over Division I-AA Marshall, last defeated a Division I opponent since beating Oklahoma State on Oct. 19, 1991.

Missouri sacked Kansas State quarterback Jason Smargiasso seven times and the Wildcats (4-5, 1-4) managed only four first downs in the first half.

Handy, who completed 21 of 33 passes for 299 yards, connected with Victor Bailey on the 31-yarder with 15 seconds left in the first half to give the Tigers a 17-7 lead. Handy also hit Bailey on a 21-yard scoring play in the third quarter.

Smargiasso ran for one Kansas State touchdown and passed for the other.
