Julie McKeon had a better afternoon than morning in the Rolex-ITA Southern California Regional Championships. The top seed from the University of San Diego lost to UCLA’s Cammie Foley, 6-3, 6-0, in the singles final at UC Irvine’s Tennis Stadium. But McKeon and Laura Richards lived up to their No. 1 billing in the doubles final. They beat Nina Eriksson and Merete Stockman of Pepperdine, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

No.11 UC San Diego, a six-time national champion, will make its 10th appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Tritons (12-18) will face No. 6 SUNY-Stony Brook (36-3) at host Washington University of St. Louis, Mo. No. 1 Washington (36-0) will play No. 12 Calvin (36-7). UCSD and Washington have met in the past two championship games, with the Tritons winning in 1990.

SWIMMING

Hilary Devine and Molly McGlennen were multiple winners, but USD’s women dropped two West Coast Conference meets. The Toreros lost to Nevada, 177-99, and UC Irvine, 166-135. Devine won the 100-yard butterfly, the 100 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley. McGlennen won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

SURFING

Rob Machado of Cardiff was seventh at the Ventura Fairgrounds but finished second in the overall rankings as the Bud Surf Tour concluded. The final stop was won by Shane Beschen of San Clemente, who also captured the Tour’s top spot with 8,555 points and $23,125 in earnings. Machado finished with 6,770 points and $15,800.

Machado and Taylor Knox of Carlsbad--who was ninth at Ventura--are both expected to advance to the 1993 ASP World Tour. Knox finished ranked sixth on the Bud circuit.
