Five Navy sailors and another man were being held in the alleged gang rape of two teen-age girls at a downtown San Diego hotel, police said Monday.

The alleged attack occurred early Sunday morning in a hotel room where the girls, ages 14 and 16, had been socializing and drinking alcohol with the men, Police Sgt. Steve Hinton said.

“It began with the girls socializing with the men, and then things got out of hand after that,” Hinton said.

A seventh man was detained, then released after police determined he was not involved in the attack, Hinton said.

Police were called to the hotel when a woman friend of one of the men arrived at the hotel and saw what was happening, he said.

The six men were booked into County Jail under suspicion of rape and unlawful intercourse with a minor, Hinton said.

The sailors were identified as Maurice Pruitt, 19; Brandall Ashley, 21; Omar Wynne, 20; John Sanders, 26; and Robert Johnson, 21. The other man was Darrell Carter, 24, of San Diego, Hinton said.

The girls also were from San Diego.
