Long Beach : Recyclable Trash Collection Adds $2.65 to Monthly Bills
Long Beach will charge its residents $2.65 a month to collect their recyclable trash and will begin collection in eastside neighborhoods by Dec. 7, officials said Tuesday.
Residents over age 62 and the physically disabled will pay $2.25 a month.
During an eight-week trial run, the city targeted 350 households chosen randomly from east and west Long Beach. Ninety-five percent of those residents participated but were not charged for the service, said James Kuhl, the city’s recycling coordinator.
The city will distribute free 18-gallon recycling bins to residents. Those in the eastside will get theirs by Dec. 7, in west Long Beach by Jan. 25, downtown by Feb. 22 and north Long Beach by March 29.
Residents will not be charged until recycling collection begins in their area, Kuhl said. Homeowners now pay $11.94 for trash pickup, and the bill with recycling will be $14.59. Apartment dwellers’ bills will increase from $9.81 to $12.46.
