OCEANSIDE : Fruit Fly Found in Oceanside Trap

Share

A Mediterranean fruit fly has been found in Oceanside, county agriculture officials announced late Friday.

Discovery of the unmated female fly in a trap in a guava tree on Reese Street prompted officials to begin placing 1,000 more traps in a square-mile area.

No further action is immediately planned.

Officials said the Mediterranean fruit fly, one of the most destructive insect pests, could cause up to $100 million in damage if it became established in the state. The fly attacks more than 250 species of fruit, nut and vegetable crops.
