The Vancouver Canucks responded to Coach Pat Quinn’s temper tantrum a day earlier by embarrassing the Edmonton Oilers, 9-0, Saturday night at Vancouver.

Quinn smashed his stick against the glass after a poor practice and a sloppy two-game performance on the road on Friday.

On Saturday, the Canucks scored four times in the first period and took a 7-0 lead after two periods with seven different scorers.

Geoff Courtnall led the assault with a power-play goal to open the scoring and three assists. Pavel Bure and Petr Nedved had two goals apiece, with Greg Adams, Cliff Ronning, Gerald Diduck and rookie Dixon Ward adding one each.

Pittsburgh 2, New Jersey 0--Tom Barrasso recorded his second shutout of the month as the Penguins tied a team record by extending their home unbeaten streak to 20 games.

Barrasso, who leads the NHL with a 13-2-2 record, got his second shutout in seven starts and the 17th of his career, making 29 saves.

The Penguins are 18-0-2 at home since last Feb. 27, matching a record set in 1974.

Boston 4, Philadelphia 3--Steve Heinze scored two goals and the Bruins smothered the Flyers’ high-scoring Crazy Eights at Boston to end Philadelphia’s five-game winning streak.

Boston kept the Crazy Eights line of Eric Lindros (No. 88), Brent Fedyk (No. 18) and Mark Recchi (No. 8) quiet for most of the night.

Quebec 8, Hartford 2--The Nordiques continued to prove they have a balanced attack with a rout at Quebec.

Gino Cavallini, Bill Lindsay and Claude Lapointe were part of a four-goal outburst in a 1:33 span of the second period as the Nordiques’ stretched their unbeaten streak to seven games.

The four goals in 1:33 were 13 seconds shy of tying a league record for the fastest goals, set by Boston in 1945.

Montreal 3, Ottawa 1--The expansion Senators lost their 10th in a row and extended their winless streak to 20 with a loss at Montreal. The Senators’ losing streak is seven short of the NHL record, set by another expansion team, the 1974-75 Washington Capitals.

Minnesota 4, Buffalo 3--Ulf Dahlen’s goal early in the third period lifted the North Stars to their third consecutive victory and handed the Sabres their fourth loss in a row at Buffalo.

N.Y. Islanders 4, Calgary 3--Derek King and Pierre Turgeon scored on New York’s only two shots of the third period as the Islanders won at Calgary.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Winnipeg 4--The Rangers ended a slump as Phil Bourque scored twice to lead the Rangers at Winnipeg.
