Courier Says He’s Tired, Wants to Forgo Davis Cup Singles in Final Next Month

Jim Courier, the top-ranked tennis player in the world, said Sunday he would like to play only doubles when the United States meets Switzerland in the Davis Cup final next month.

“I have been playing a month (in Europe),” Courier said after losing, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, to Boris Becker in the ATP Tour World Championship final. “I am a little tired.”

Asked if he was tired mentally or physically, Courier replied:

“You name it. I got the whole spectrum of tired.”

Tom Gorman, the U.S. captain, has picked Courier, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe to play Switzerland Dec. 4-6 at Ft. Worth.

Gorman said he will call Courier when Courier returns home to Dade City, Fla., early this week.

“I really don’t want to make any comment until I talk to Jim,” said Gorman. “But I will talk to him in the next day or so. By Tuesday maybe he will have forgotten what he said.”
