PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Harrison Keeps Getting His Kicks

Share

The last time Nolan Harrison had a season like this, he was at Homewood-Flossmoor High in Flossmoor, Ill.

One season there, he blocked four kicks.

Sunday, the Raider defensive lineman blocked his third of the season, deflecting a 23-yard field-goal attempt by the Denver Broncos’ David Treadwell.

“It’s all technique and timing,” said the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Harrison. “The guard and center were in my gap. I came through big time. It was almost like nobody touched me.”

Harrison stuck his right arm up and had the most pleasant sensation a player in that situation can experience, the feel of the football bouncing off him.

“I needed that,” he said, smiling. “I’m just a grunt.”

Receiver Sam Graddy, who suffered a broken arm two months ago against the Kansas City Chiefs, has been declared fit to resume practicing. But Coach Art Shell said that no decision has been made on when to bring Graddy back. His return would mean someone on the roster would have to go; one possibility is seldom-used Mervyn Fernandez.

Sunday’s 24-0 victory by the Raiders over Denver was a rarity in the recent rivalry between the two teams. In the last 17 non-strike games between the Raiders and Broncos, only two were decided by seven points or more. The average margin of victory over that span has been four points.

Sunday’s victory was the Raiders’ fifth in a row over Denver in the Coliseum.
