The San Diego City Council has decided that alcohol consumption, already banned or strictly limited in several of San Diego’s public park areas, should be banned in many additional parks.

Council members Monday unanimously approved a 24-hour drinking ban in more than 75 parks and other public facilities in the heart of the city. No public opposition was expressed before the vote.

In June, 1991, the council limited alcohol consumption to daytime hours or outlawed it completely on public land primarily in Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and La Jolla.

“We’ve seen a reduction in crime,” said Councilman Ron Roberts, whose district includes Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach.

Areas covered by the extended liquor ban, which takes effect in 45 days, includes Balboa Park, except for the area bounded by California 163, Park Boulevard, Upas Street and Interstate 5.

Also affected are Adams Community Park, Chicano Park, Chollas Community Park, City Heights Community Park, Colina del Sol Community Park, East San Diego Adult Recreation Club, Emerald Hills Park, Encanto Park, Kensington Park, Paradise Hills Community Park, Silver Wing Park and Skyline Community Park.

Permits allowing alcohol consumption at special events in those locations will be available.
