COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Defense Can’t Overcome 27% Shooting

Share

Despite shooting 27% from the field, only two missed three-point baskets by Glen Greene in the final 11 seconds stood between Chapman and its 63-60 loss to Occidental Tuesday night in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Chapman.

The Panthers (1-1) made 19 of 70 shots from the field, including one for 22 from the three-point line, but they still had a chance to tie in the closing seconds because of a pressure defense that forced 31 turnovers.

Trailing, 51-42, with eight minutes remaining, Chapman held Occidental scoreless for the next 3 1/2 minutes. Jeff Gardner scored six of his game-high 20 points during the 10-0 run to give Chapman a 52-51 lead.

Joe Myhren, who scored 18 points, made a three-pointer with 3 minutes 59 seconds left to give Occidental (1-1) a 56-54 lead it never relinquished.

Sean Washington’s steal and layup got Chapman to within 62-60 with 41 seconds remaining, but the Panthers drew no closer.

Rod Summers added 12 points and nine rebounds for Chapman, and Gardner led the Panthers in rebounding with 16. Greene had 10 points for Chapman. Brian Slattery had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Occidental.
