PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Del Rio Makes a Hit With Vikings

Share

Jack Del Rio was drafted by New Orleans, traded to Kansas City, picked up on waivers by Dallas and signed via Plan B this spring by Minnesota. If Viking Coach Dennis Green’s evaluation of Del Rio is accurate, however, the Rams won’t be celebrating the former USC linebacker’s homecoming Sunday at Anaheim Stadium.

“We said let’s go get the best middle linebacker we can find and he’s the guy we coveted most,” Green said. “I think Jack is an excellent run stopper and he has a great feel for the ball.

“We needed somebody who can go meet the play, which means meet the guard, meet the lead back, meet the tackle, meet the tight end, whatever. Jack can do all those things. He also can play nickel and stay on the field in passing situations. And he’s a great on-the-field leader because the guy really loves to play.”

Del Rio leads the Vikings with 98 tackles.

Injury updates: Cornerback Darryl Henley, who suffered a bruised shoulder against the 49ers, did not practice again Friday, but Coach Chuck Knox said he still might play Sunday. If Henley does not, Robert Bailey will start in his place. Fullback Robert Delpino, who has been out because of a sprained knee, practiced Friday and Knox said a decision on whether to activate him will be made today. Michael Stewart has a broken forearm and will not play.

Playing it safe: Jim Everett has thrown only one interception in the last five games, that on the last play against Phoenix when he put the ball up for grabs. . . . For the second game in a row, the Rams did not have a turnover against the 49ers. The last time they played two games without a turnover was in 1983. . . . About 12,700 tickets remained unsold by the 72-hour deadline, so Sunday’s game against the Vikings will not be televised locally.
