LOS ANGELES : Judge to Rule on Cutting Welfare to Single Adults

A judge on Monday said he will decide no later than Wednesday whether to bar the county temporarily from cutting welfare payments to poor, single adults.

Public interest lawyers wanted Superior Court Judge Kurt Lewin to immediately block the county from cutting general relief aid payments by $39 a month.

Mark Rosenbaum, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California, said several general relief recipients will be evicted from their apartments unless the judge at least issues a temporary order.

But Roberta Fesler, an attorney representing the county, said that if a temporary restraining order is issued and Lewin ultimately allows the cuts, the county would be unable to recoup the $500,000 from people who go off general relief between the December and January pay periods.

The reductions, scheduled to go into effect Friday, were approved last Tuesday in a closed meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
