A student support program at a Sherman Oaks junior high school has been named one of the state’s best on-campus programs for assisting young people.

The National Organization of Student Assistance Programs and Partners, based in Boulder, Colo., has recognized Millikan Junior High School’s IMPACT project as an Outstanding 1992 California Student Assistance Program.

School officials will formally receive the award at a ceremony scheduled for Thursday in Long Beach.

In the IMPACT program, groups of students meet for an hour each week to talk about contemporary issues, including drug and alcohol abuse, sex, grief and suicide.

Each group is led by two adults and is composed of about a dozen youths.

“They need to learn how to deal with stress,” said Millikan Assistant Principal Norm Isaacs. “They need to learn how to adapt.”

All secondary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District implement the IMPACT program, which is subsidized by federal funds.

But Millikan’s was recognized for its high level of participation, district officials said.

About 500 of 1,600 students this year are participating in Millikan’s program. Some campus IMPACT programs involve only a few dozen youths.
