A car passenger Wednesday repeatedly stabbed a bicyclist who he claimed had cut the driver off.

The wounded bicyclist, Jose Luis Aldana, 28, of Orange, got back onto his bike and tried to ride for help but collapsed near Orange High School.

The attack occurred about 1:15 p.m. on Shaffer Street. Police said Aldana was riding to work when he got into an argument with two men in a white car who then drove off.

“A short time later, at the intersection of Shaffer and Barkley Avenue, the car pulled over to the curb and the passenger got out,” Police Lt. Timm Browne said. “He walked towards Aldana, pulled out a knife and stabbed him three times.”

Aldana “made a U-turn and peddled southbound toward the high school where he knew there would be more people around,” Browne said.

A resident who saw him lying on the side of the street called paramedics. Aldana was in guarded condition Wednesday night at a county hospital, a spokeswoman said.

The men in the car are described as white and 18 or 19 years old. The passenger is about six feet tall, weighs 140 pounds, has light brown hair and brown eyes, Browne said. The car is a small, white, two-door with tinted windows.
