SANTA CLARITA : City Workers Get Emergency Training

Share

About 250 Santa Clarita city employees are participating in a mandatory emergency training course this week in response to a report by scientists that there is a 47% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater in Southern California within five years.

The training, offered to some employees Thursday and all others today, is aimed at helping participants deal with having to leave their families to help the city cope with a major disaster, City Manager George Caravalho said Thursday.

Participants are taught to distribute preparedness materials, including emergency bags and lists of what to put in them, officials said.

The city also regularly trains residents in a free program called SECURE (Santa Clarita Educated Communities in Response to Emergencies).

The city has conducted 96 such training sessions for more than 2,000 residents this year, officials said.
