Until a few days ago, the Mariners were set to start the season with Rhett Heckel as coach. But Heckel, who had coached the team since 1986-87, resigned to devote more time to business interests and Brodt took over. The new coach, however, is not unfamiliar with the program. He assisted Heckel for five seasons and coached the junior varsity squad during that time. “I’m real excited,” Brodt said. “I’m real comfortable with the kids and they are comfortable with me.” Brodt inherits a squad with size and quickness. Vlasic, one of the mainstays, was an all-league pick who averaged 15 points last season. Cousins, who Brodt said, “takes up an awful lot of room inside,” crashes the boards hard. He averaged nine rebounds last season. They’ll get support from Surface, Vergara and Alliman, the MVP on the JV team. Brodt said Alliman will start in the front line. Even with a new coach, don’t expect the Mariners to drastically change their game plan over ones from previous seasons. “The main parts of our offense and defense will be the same, so the transition won’t be too hard on the kids,” Brodt said. “We are going to get the ball up and down the court, but if we need to slow it down, we’ve got the size inside. I think we have a lot of versatility on the team.”
