Fire Damages 3 High School Rooms
A fire fueled by a natural gas leak burned portions of three classrooms at Oxnard High School on Saturday night, causing $70,000 in damage, Oxnard fire officials said.
The blaze started about 5 p.m. around a gas heater and traveled through a heating duct to the school’s second floor, said Bob Ralston, an engineer with the Oxnard Fire Department. Natural gas emissions helped fuel the blaze, Ralston said.
Firefighters and eight fire engines helped extinguish the blaze before it reached the attic by tearing apart the walls and ceiling and dousing the flames with water.
