Stanford shot less than 30% (seven of 24) in the first half, 33% for the game and lost to Virginia, 72-48, Saturday at Charlottesville, Va.

Doug Smith and Junior Burrough scored 15 points each for the Cavaliers (2-0), who broke the game open early in the second half with a 10-0 run. Marcus Lollie was high for the Cardinal (1-2) with 12 points.

Robert Richardson scored 20 points to lead Pacific (1-1) to an 80-68 victory over Oregon (1-4) at Stockton, marking the first time since 1971 that the Tigers beat a Pacific 10 team since the Tigers defeated Washington. . . . Charles McKinney scored 19 points and Scott Haskins and Chad Scott each had 18 as Oregon State (2-1) defeated Seattle Pacific, 69-62, at Corvallis, Ore. Reggie Paul had 23 for the Division II Falcons (3-2). . . . San Jose State made six consecutive free throws in the final 1:45 of overtime after overcoming a 13-point second-half deficit and upset Gonzaga, 76-73, at San Jose. . . . Grant Tracy scored 23 points, including a pair of free throws with 56 seconds left, to lead Portland (1-1) to an 89-87 victory over Seattle (0-5) at Portland.

Penn State won its first game as a full-fledged member of the Big Ten, overcoming a seven-point deficit in the second half at State College, Pa., for a 60-55 nonconference victory over Mount St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Nittany Lions (1-1) held the Mountaineers (0-3) scoreless during the final 4:25 and DeRon Hayes’ 15-foot jump shot with 2:35 left gave Penn State a 56-55 lead. . . . Six Boston College players scored in double figures as the Eagles (1-0) recorded a 96-57 victory over Harvard. . . . Jonathan Haynes scored 23 points and Calvin Byrd had 22 to lead Villanova to an 86-74 victory over American University at Washington. The game was the first with Villanova for Coach Steve Lappas, former head coach at Manhattan College. He replaced Rollie Massimino, who became the coach at Nevada Las Vegas.

Geert Hammink, a seven-foot senior center who is trying to plug the vacancy left by the early departure of Shaquille O’Neal to the pros, scored 20 points and Louisiana State (3-0) capitalized on 20 turnovers in an 82-48 victory over Mercer at Baton Rogue, La. . . . Rodney Rogers and Randolph Childress scored 23 points each to lead Wake Forest (2-0) to a 95-76 victory over Vermont at Winston-Salem, N.C.

MIDWEST

David Diaz scored 10 of his 22 points during a 22-8 run in the second half to spark Houston (1-0) to an 82-65 victory over DePaul (1-1) at Chicago. . . . Tony Block and Jimmy Soto each scored 14 points and Josh Grant added 13 in leading Utah (3-0) to an 83-49 victory over Bradley (0-1) at Peoria, Ill.

TOURNAMENTS

Paul Johnson of UC Santa Barbara held Nathan Randle of Stephen F. Austin to five points to lead the Gauchos (2-0) to a 70-39 victory in the Gaucho Classic title game at Goleta. Randle was averaging 29 points a game. The Lumberjacks (2-1) were held to 29% shooting. Duane Carter had 17 points and eight rebounds for UCSB. . . . Marvin Moore scored 29 points to lead Rice (2-1) to a 68-60 victory over Washington in the championship game of the Husky Tournament at Seattle. Rich Manning scored 25 points for the Huskies (2-1). . . . Christopher Grant scored on a layup with 23 seconds left to give the San Diego a 65-64 victory over host Hawaii Friday night in the second semifinal game of the Tip-Off Classic at Honolulu. The Rainbows (0-2) led San Diego (1-1) 58-46 with 6:50 left. Cal State Long Beach, a 72-69 winner over Tulsa in the first game, will play the Toreros in the championship game today.
