LANCASTER : City Opens Talks on New Site for Fair
Lancaster city officials have opened discussions with directors of the state-run Antelope Valley Fair about relocating the annual event from the 80-acre fairgrounds to a larger but more remote site.
City officials said the fair has outgrown its present location and is drawing complaints from nearby residents about concerts and plans for auto racing events.
Councilman Arnie Rodio, chairman of the city’s Redevelopment Agency, said city and fair officials have discussed a possible trade in which the agency would acquire a larger state-owned site for the fair, up to 160 acres on the north end of town along the Antelope Valley Freeway, in return for the city obtaining and redeveloping the existing site.
Toward that end, the Lancaster City Council voted 5 to 0 Monday night to spend $29,500 to conduct an appraisal of the present site.
