MISSION VIEJO : Swanson to Head College Trustees

Iris Swanson, a founding member of the Saddleback Community College District staff, has been elected president of the district’s Board of Trustees for the coming year.

“I am very honored by the confidence placed in me during a particularly challenging period, a time of increasing student enrollments and decreasing state revenue,” Swanson said.

Swanson, 65, retired in 1983 after serving as executive assistant to the chancellor and the Board of Trustees for 15 years. She was among the original staff members when the district was formed in 1968. For two years after her retirement, she taught business science courses at Saddleback College.

A longtime resident of San Clemente, Swanson was elected to the seven-member board in 1985 and has held positions of president, vice president and clerk of the board. She was elected president Monday by her board colleagues.

Last June, Swanson ran unsuccessfully for the Assembly in the new 73rd District. Swanson is a member of the Community College Educators of Older Adults and in 1990 was named Woman of Distinction by the Soroptimist International of Capistrano Bay.

Other officers elected this week include Harriett S. Walther of Santa Ana as vice president, and Joan Hueter of Tustin as clerk.
