From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A San Diego man convicted of attempting to kill his former lover by shooting him in the head with an arrow from a crossbow was sentenced Friday to life in prison plus seven years. Jesse J. Solis, 24, was convicted of shooting Arthur Ekvall as he lay in bed June 8. The arrow pierced the back of Ekvall’s head, just missing his brain. Solis’ attorney had argued for a lighter sentence, saying that his client has the AIDS virus. Court officials said it will be 10 years before Solis is eligible for parole. Defense attorney Arturo Herrera argued during the trial that Solis fired accidentally after Ekvall attempted to sexually assault him. But Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Hammes said the attack was the culmination of months of harassment by Solis that began after the couple’s relationship deteriorated.
