COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Louisville Can’t Stay With Kentucky

Louisville wasn’t merely another game on the schedule for Jamal Mashburn.

Mashburn scored six of his 27 points during a 17-1 run that carried the third-ranked Wildcats to an 88-68 victory over the ninth-ranked Cardinals on Saturday night at Louisville, Ky.

“It’s a great feeling to beat them on their home floor,” Mashburn said. “We took the fans out of the game and turned it into our gym. We took control of the game.”

Kentucky (4-0) recorded its third consecutive victory and holds a 17-7 edge in the series.

Mashburn started Kentucky’s decisive run with a layup after a turnover for a 61-50 lead with 12:45 left in the game and finished it with a three-pointer to make it 76-51 with nine minutes left before a record crowd of 19,663 at Freedom Hall.

Louisville (1-2) had 19 turnovers, which Kentucky converted into 24 points, and the Cardinals missed 20 of 36 free-throw attempts.

No. 1 Duke 88, Rutgers 79--Bobby Hurley made a three-point basket and passed to Grant Hill for two alley-oop dunks in a 19-6 run that powered the Blue Devils past the Scarlet Knights at East Rutherford, N.J.

Hurley had 16 points and 11 assists in the game at the Meadowlands, where Duke (4-0) is 12-1. Grant Hill added 26 points and Thomas Hill had 19 as Duke won its 17th consecutive game.

Jamal Phillips scored 18 points for Rutgers (2-3), which stayed within 47-42 at halftime.

No. 2 Kansas 108, Missouri Kansas City 62--Sean Pearson scored 19 points and the Jayhawks trounced the Kangaroos in the championship game of the Golden Harvest Classic at Kansas City.

The Jayhawks (5-0) won their two tournament games by a combined total of 94 points.

Eric Pauley, Rex Walters and Darrin Hancock all added 15 points for the Jayhawks.

Tony Dumas scored 22 points for the Kangaroos (2-3).

No. 4 Indiana 97, Western Michigan 58--Calbert Cheaney scored 22 points, including the 2,000th of his career, as the Hoosiers routed the Broncos to win the Indiana Classic for the 19th consecutive time, or every year of its existence, at Bloomington, Ind.

Only Steve Alford (2,438 points), Don Schlundt (2,192) and Mike Woodson (2,061) have scored more for Indiana than Cheaney.

The Broncos (1-3) were held to one field goal for one 6:04 stretch, during which Indiana (7-1) extended a 57-42 lead into a 69-45 advantage.

No. 8 Iowa 78, Iowa State 51--Val Barnes scored 19 points and the Hawkeyes held the Cyclones scoreless for nearly eight minutes during the first half at Iowa City.

Barnes scored 13 points in the first half, when the Hawkeyes (5-0) countered a 10-2 spurt with a 19-0 run to take a 28-13 lead with 6:19 left before halftime.

Acie Earl added 15 points for Iowa and Julius Michalik scored 13 points for Iowa State (4-2), which upset the Hawkeyes, 98-84, last season at Ames.

No. 11 Oklahoma 93, No. 23 Massachusetts 83--Jeff Webster scored 25 points and the Sooners used a 17-1 run late in the game to overcome the Minutemen at Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma (5-0) avenged last year’s 86-73 loss to the Minutemen (2-2) despite shooting only 44% and making only 12 of 26 free throws in the second half.

Harper Williams had 17 points and 12 rebounds, helping Massachusetts build a 67-58 lead with 9:33 remaining.

Oklahoma, which used a 19-1 run in the first half to overcome a sluggish start, trailed, 72-70, when Terry Evans made a three-pointer to start the decisive run.

No. 11 Georgetown 87, Maryland Eastern Shore 54--Othella Harrington scored seven of his 16 points as the Hoyas scored the last 12 points of the first half to pull away from the Hawks at Washington.

It was Georgetown’s first game on campus since the 1982-83 season.

The Hoyas (4-0) led, 27-24, with three minutes left in the first half when Joey Brown scored a basket to start the surge, which including six points in 10 seconds.

Spencer had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Marlin Kimbrew scored 16 for Eastern Shore (2-4).

No. 14 Arizona 78, Utah 64--Khalid Reeves hit back-to-back three-pointers during a 14-2 run in the second half and the Wildcats defeated the Utes at Tucson.

Reeves scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and led a defense that forced 11 second-half turnovers and had eight steals as the Wildcats (2-1) overcame a 39-31 halftime deficit.

Utah (4-1), which took the lead by scoring the last eight points of the first half, was ahead, 50-45, when Arizona started its surge with 11 consecutive points to take the lead for good.

Arizona’s Chris Mills scored 19 points and held Josh Grant, Utah’s leading scorer at 17.8 points per game, to nine points on four-for-12 shooting.

No. 15 Syracuse 104, Texas San Antonio 78--Mike Hopkins and John Wallace scored 18 points each and the Orangemen overwhelmed the Roadrunners with a full-court press in the first half at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse (5-0) forced the Roadrunners (1-2) into 19 turnovers in the first half, turning many of them into layups while building a 53-38 lead after 20 minutes.

Mike Ferguson scored 24 for Texas San Antonio.

No. 17 Georgia Tech 102, Georgia State 79--James Forrest scored 30 points and led a 24-4 game-opening run as the Yellow Jackets trounced their cross-town rivals at Atlanta.

Georgia State (2-1) played without senior center Zavian Smith, who was put on academic probation and will miss the rest of the season.

Georgia Tech (2-1) led, 52-27, at halftime and by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Mike Nalls had 23 points for the Panthers.

No. 18 Purdue 84, Loyola Chicago 70--Glenn Robinson scored 21 points and the Boilermakers rolled past the Ramblers at West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermakers (4-0) had a 38-33 lead at halftime and pulled away with a 16-3 burst in the first five minutes of the second half.

Eric Dolezal scored 15 points for the Ramblers (1-3), who fell behind by 26 points twice before making the final score respectable against Purdue’s reserves.

No. 19 Cincinnati 91, Georgia Southern 57--Curtis Bostic scored six of his 16 points in an opening 15-5 flurry and the Bearcats were in charge throughout a victory over the Eagles in the championship game of the Delta Bearcat Classic at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (3-0) stymied Georgia Southern (3-1) with its pressure defense, which forced 26 turnovers that were turned into 27 points.

Erik Martin added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearcats, and Cincinnati, playmaker Nick Van Exel, returning from arthroscopic knee surgery eight days ago, scored nine points on four-of-10 shooting in 15 minutes.

No. 20 Tulane 91, Northwestern Louisiana 81--Anthony Reed scored 23 points and the Green Wave got past the Demons at New Orleans.

Using full-court, man-to-man defense, Tulane (5-1) outscored the Demons, 24-2, in a six-minute span while building a 53-33 halftime lead.

Eric Kubel scored 24 points for Northwestern (2-1), which closed to 84-76 with 1:34 left before Tulane regained control.

No. 22 Nevada Las Vegas 89, San Diego State 77--The Rebels, wearing black uniforms for the first time, got 29 points from J.R. Rider and beat the Aztecs at San Diego.

The Rebels (2-0) took control in the second half after getting outscored, 18-1, over the last 6:45 of the first half.

Keith Balzer had 20 points and 13 rebounds for San Diego State (2-3).

No. 25 Nebraska 71, Wichita State 64--Jamar Johnson had a basket and two free throws in the final minutes and the Cornhuskers held the Shockers without a field goal for most of the final four minutes to escape with a victory at Wichita, Kan.

Eric Piatkowski scored 19 points for the Huskers (5-0), who had a 60-59 lead with 3:50 to play before holding Wichita State (1-2) without a field goal until the final 10 seconds.
