NORTH HOLLYWOOD : Pact to Help Students Get Jobs at Shopping Mall
Students from North Hollywood High School--the site of recent race-related violence--will get help landing jobs at Laurel Plaza Mall under an agreement outlined Tuesday by the school, the shopping center developer and the local Chamber of Commerce.
Calling the program the first of its kind in Los Angeles, the organizers said they hope to spawn similar efforts in other areas.
The jobs program originally was to coincide with a still-pending proposal by Laurel Plaza’s owner, Forest City Development, to expand the mall, but it will get an earlier start because of the April-May riots and the unrest in October at North Hollywood High, a company executive said.
The program offers no guarantees to job-seekers. But about 30 of the mall’s 34 merchants have agreed to give local residents and students from the school first crack at interviews for part-time job openings.
