Republicans and Tolerance

Share

In his article “Getting Even” (Opinion, Nov. 29) John Podhoretz got it all wrong. If any group of people were becoming “imperialist” government bureaucrats, it was the Republicans. John Sununu is a prime example, among others, who used high office to further their own ends as well as those of friends. The 12 years of Republican rule is rife with these examples. Republicans talk about “less government,” but only insofar as it doesn’t impede their ambitions.

School vouchers are a good example. The working class will not have enough money of their own to add to these voucher “giveaways” to send their children to so-called “better” schools. The upper-middle class will be subsidized and will be sending their children to “elite” schools with the taxpayers’ help, just as they used the S&Ls; to enrich themselves. Vouchers will signal the end of public schools, which are the heart of a democracy, but Republicans are more interested in self-aggrandizement than the health of a democracy that provides prosperity and hope for everyone.
