Harpist Dragon in Concert

The delicate music of harpist Carmen Dragon will come to Oxnard for a “Candlelight Christmas Concert” Saturday at Heritage Square Hall.

Dragon--a seasoned veteran of symphony performances--will be accompanied by flutist Cathy Larson and cellist Stephanie Fife.

“We’ll be performing a mixture of classical work--such as Bach, Mozart and Pachelbel--and traditional Christmas pieces,” Dragon said.

The program will also include work that her late father, Carmen Dragon, scored while conductor of the Glendale Symphony.

Dragon, once an Ojai resident, has performed with the Ventura County, Santa Barbara and Glendale symphonies and has recorded with the likes of Melissa Manchester and Barry Manilow. She’s just back from a months-long performance schedule in Greece and other European countries touring on a cruise ship.

“I hope to see some of my old friends from (Ventura County) Saturday,” she said.

Saturday’s concert will feature an informational discussion on the workings of the elegant six-foot, 47-string harp. “During the concert I’ll perform a piece and demonstrate how the harp works,” she said.

Dragon’s performance kicks off the “Six Saturdays of Entertainment” concert series at Heritage Hall. Future performances include Sheer Pandemonium (Celtic folk music) Jan. 16; Phil Birdsell (singer-impersonator) Feb. 6; Night Work (contemporary jazz) Feb. 20; Carlos Gonzales (classical guitarist) March 6, and Master Chorale (trio and quartet) March 27.

All concerts begin at 8 p.m. and tickets are $8.50. Season tickets are $45. Seating is limited. Heritage Square Hall is at 731 S. A St. To order advance tickets or for more information, call 483-7960.
