COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Lewis Scores 38 as Golden West Defeats Canyons

Sophomore forward Josh Lewis scored a career-high 38 points to help Golden West to a 97-90 victory over College of the Canyons in the first round of the Cypress Bill Taormina Tournament Thursday at Cypress.

Lewis was 14 of 20 from the field, made nine of nine free throws and also had 12 rebounds. Dave Dunham added 21 for Golden West (5-7).

Golden West took a 15-0 lead after five minutes of play. Canyons rallied to within four points with just under three minutes left, but Lewis made a three-pointer to help Golden West hang on.

In other Cypress tournament games:

Cypress 95, Biola JV 61--Rich Pilawski had 15 points and Anthony Livingston added 14 for Cypress (11-3) in the first-round game. Cypress plays Oxnard at 8 tonight in one semifinal. Robbie Shelton added 12 points and Steve Siefken and Chris Fry had 10 points each. Cypress led at the half, 56-21. Biola JV is 3-5.

Long Beach 82, Irvine Valley 79--Chris Kostoff missed a three-point try as time ran out for Irvine Valley in the opening round. Long Beach’s Wardell Fordham made one of two free throws with four seconds left to give Long Beach an 82-79 lead. Kostoff finished with 22 points and Gabe Higa had 17 for Irvine Valley (7-5).

Jamie Davis had 19 points for Long Beach (13-3), which plays Golden West at 6 tonight in one championship semifinal. Irvine Valley plays College of the Canyons at 2 p.m. in the consolation round.

In a nonconference game:

Fullerton 116, Azusa JV 70--Kevin Carlson had 24 points on 11 of 13 shooting from the field for host Fullerton (8-7). Eddie Cochran and Bobby Natoya had 18 points each for Fullerton, which led at the break, 55-39.
