San Francisco to Use Schools as Homeless Shelters During Holidays
Mayor Frank Jordan on Monday announced plans to turn three public schools into homeless shelters over the holidays and said he will attempt to provide emergency beds during all cold spells.
The mayor said it is his duty to find beds for the city’s estimated 1,000 homeless when overnight temperatures drop near freezing.
Officials came up with the school plan because forecasts called for a cold snap during the holidays. But a cold front moved into Oregon, missing Northern California.
Jordan said the school shelters would open anyway so that homeless people who would otherwise sleep outdoors will have a “warm blanket, a cot and some warm soup” during the holiday weeks.
The schools, in the Mission, Haight-Ashbury and south of Market Street neighborhoods, will be used as drop-in centers and shelters starting Wednesday or Thursday.
