San Gabriel Valley : Christmas Tree Recycling

Los Angeles County and Santa Anita Fashion Park are offering gifts to anyone who brings in a Christmas tree for recycling.

The county recycling program will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends of Jan. 2-3 and 9-10.

Trees will be accepted at Schabarum Regional Park, 17250 E. Colima Road, Rowland Heights; Charter Oak Park, 20261 E. Covina Road, Covina, and Eaton Canyon Park, 1750 N. Altadena Drive, Pasadena.

Those who bring a tree will receive a coupon for a free bag of potting soil.

Santa Anita Fashion Park, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., in Arcadia, will take trees Dec. 28 to Jan. 9 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, in the parking lot off Baldwin Avenue near the former Buffums store.

A free seedling tree will be exchanged for every Christmas tree.

San Gabriel residents also can recycle their trees by either leaving them at their curbs on trash collection day the week of Jan. 4 or taking them to a bin that will be placed at the northwest corner of the parking lot at San Gabriel Civic Auditorium from Monday at least through Jan. 8. San Gabriel Disposal Co. will recycle the trees.

Recycled Christmas trees are reduced to chips for mulch.
