Two men died after the motorcycle they were riding slammed into a light pole, police said Wednesday.

The driver, identified as Glen Theodore Schleich, 28, of Anaheim, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died after the accident just before midnight Tuesday, Sgt. Harold Parkison said. Schleich was wearing a helmet, authorities said.

Coroner’s officials identified the passenger, but withheld releasing his name pending notification of relatives. The passenger, who was not wearing a helmet, was dead at the scene.

Police investigators said Schleich’s motorcycle was traveling west in the 1000 block of West Katella Avenue. The motorcycle passed a car and changed lanes toward the center of the street, police said.

For unknown reasons, the motorcycle continued into the center divider and slid a short distance before striking the light pole, Parkison said.

An autopsy did not indicate any drug or alcohol use, but toxicological tests are pending, Parkison said.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist was traveling at about 40 m.p.h., the posted speed limit.
