Steve Kinser, perennial World of Outlaws sprint car champion, was named to the 1992 All-American race car drivers first team for a record 11th time, it was announced Wednesday by Dusty Brandel, president of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Assn.

Kinser, 37, of Bloomington, Ind., won 31 of 73 races to take the series championship for the 12th time. His selection broke a tie with drag racer Don Garlits for most times on the first team.

Driver of the year Bobby Rahal, the PPG Cup Indy car champion; and Michael Andretti, winner of a season-high five Indy car races, were named from the open-wheel category on the 12-driver team. Stock car selectees were Winston Cup champion Alan Kulwicki and Daytona 500 winner Davey Allison, both for the first time.

Road racers named were Juan Manuel Fangio II, winner of the International Motor Sports Assn. GTP championship in a Toyota; and Jack Baldwin, the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans Am champion in a Camaro.

Other selections were Mike Eddy, American Speed Assn. champion for a record seventh season; Irv Hoerr, IMSA Exxon Supreme GTO series champion; and Rod Millen, champion of the Grand National sports truck category in the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Gran Prix series. Millen also won an SCCA Pro Rally event in Prescott, Ariz., and the showroom stock class at the Pikes Peak hill climb.
