Air Force Coach Fisher DeBerry doesn’t have good memories of his Falcons’ last meeting with Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl.

“That was our first experience playing in the Liberty Bowl, and we did not play as well as we knew we were capable of playing, but a lot went into that,” DeBerry said.

Mississippi won that game, 42-29, in 1989, charged with the emotion of a pregame speech by paralyzed teammate Chucky Mullins, who died in May of 1991.

The Falcons (7-4) are feeling much more confident as they head into their fourth consecutive Liberty Bowl as winners of the Commander-in-Chief Cup even though they are underdogs to No. 20 Mississippi (8-3) in tonight’s matchup (4:45 p.m., ESPN).

Air Force beat Ohio State, 23-11, in 1990 and beat Mississippi State, 38-15, last season.
