A gang member was arrested at his San Fernando home Thursday morning on suspicion of shooting a gang rival as he stood with a group of students in front of San Fernando High School in December, Los Angeles police said.

Jesse Bernal Gutierrez, 18, was arrested without incident at his residence in the 1100 block of Glenoaks Boulevard in the shooting of Roger Resendiz, 17, of Van Nuys. Resendiz, a sophomore at the school, was wounded twice in the lower leg and is recovering, authorities said.

Several suspected gang members drove up to students gathered in front of the high school on O’Melveny Avenue during a lunch break on Dec. 15, Detective William G. Humphry said. Gutierrez shouted a gang slogan and fired several rounds with a small handgun, striking Resendiz, Humphry said.

No other students were hurt in the incident. The gun used in the attack has not been recovered.

On Monday, members of the Valley Gang Task Force--including Los Angeles and San Fernando police and the FBI--arrested the driver of the car used in the shooting, Humphry said. The driver, a 17-year-old youth, led investigators to Gutierrez.

Police said Gutierrez and Resendiz are both known gang members.

Gutierrez is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 5. The driver is being detained at Sylmar Juvenile Hall.
