Brad May, in only his second season in the NHL, has apparently paid close attention to what coaches and players have been telling him--especially about paying close attention to Alexander Mogilny.

May, playing on a line with Pat Lafontaine and Mogilny, picked up a rebound of a Mogilny shot and fired a backhander into the St. Louis net 1:20 into overtime to give the Sabres a 6-5 victory over the Blues Sunday night at Buffalo.

“Alex is very hot right now and he’s shooting a lot and they seem to be going in for him,” May said. “So, I had an idea he was going to shoot and I would come in for a rebound. Luckily one came for me and I was able to put it in.”

May’s awareness paid off for the Sabres, who won their third consecutive game for the first time this season.

“We’re a tired hockey club,” Sabre Coach John Muckler said. “We worked hard and stayed with them and we showed some grit. We won a game that maybe could have gone either way.”

Mogilny scored two goals, giving him 38 for the season. He has scored in each of the Sabres’ last eight games, tying Buffalo’s consecutive-game scoring record set by Mike Foligno in 1984-85.

The Blues took a 5-4 lead on Rich Sutter’s goal at 3:54 of the third period, but Buffalo tied the score, 5-5, when Randy Wood’s shot went off Hebert’s glove into the net at 5:08.

Chicago 4, Winnipeg 1--Steve Larmer scored shorthanded and power-play goals in the first period to lead the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Larmer recorded his team-leading 22nd and 23rd goals. Chris Chelios had a goal and two assists and center Brent Sutter a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks.

Chicago goaltender Ed Belfour, who lowered his league-leading goals-against average of 2.44, stopped 27 of 28 Winnipeg shots.

The Blackhawks raised their Norris Division lead to four points over second-place Detroit.

Philadelphia 2, Edmonton 2--Rod Brind’Amour’s power-play goal with 4:38 left in the third period lifted the Flyers to a tie at Edmonton.

The Flyers were behind, 2-0, before Andrei Lomakin scored a goal midway through the third period off a pass from Brind’Amour.

The tying goal came after Brind’Amour skated along the blue line while teammate Brent Fedyk screened Oiler goaltender Bill Ranford. Brind’Amour’s shot deflected off an Edmonton player in front of the net.

Minnesota 6, Hartford 6--Ulf Dahlen, Dave Gagner and Russ Courtnall scored third-period goals at Hartford, Conn., as the North Stars came from behind to forge the tie.

The Whalers had taken leads of 3-0 and 6-3, but their winless streak stretched to five games (0-4-1).

Courtnall tied the score with a slap shot with 4:01 to play.

Gagner scored on a short wrist shot and Dahlen on a rebound eight seconds into a power play as the North Stars went three-for-four with the man advantage.

Tampa Bay at Vancouver--The scheduled game at Vancouver was postponed because of snow and rescheduled for tonight.

A heavy overnight snowstorm in the Vancouver area prevented the Lightning from arriving at Vancouver International Airport from Edmonton, where Tampa Bay lost, 2-1, on Saturday night.
