Artsplace, who retired as the undefeated world champion pacer after one of the most spectacular seasons in harness racing history, was overwhelmingly chosen Harness Horse of the Year on Wednesday.

Artsplace received 243 of the 293 votes cast by the United States Harness Writers Assn. and North American Harness Racing Secretaries.

Three-year-old pacer Western Hanover was a distant second with 33 votes.

Owned by Chicago commodities trader George Segal and Brian Monieson, the 4-year-old Artsplace won all 16 of his starts last season, while earning $932,325. He paced the fastest mile in harness racing history--1:49 2/5 at The Meadowlands.

A world champion as a 2-year-old in 1990, Artsplace fell back in 1991 before coming back strong.
