LOS ANGELES : 1 of 2 Rival Term Limit Plans Approved for Ballot

The Los Angeles city clerk’s office ruled Friday that a term limit initiative promoted by mayoral candidate Richard Riordan had enough voter signatures to qualify for the April ballot. The ruling makes it likely that the election will feature dual term limit measures.

The initiative being pushed by Riordan’s Citizens for L.A. Term Limits would limit city elected officials to two terms in office. Those council members whose seats are not up for election this year could serve only one additional term if the measure passes.

A rival measure introduced by City Council members and expected to soon win final approval also calls for a two-term limit, but would allow those council members whose terms come due after this year to serve two more terms. If both measures are approved, the one with the most votes will go into effect.
