Share

A truck driver was killed in an accident along the Golden State Freeway when his truck carrying a load of cattle was hit in the rear by another truck near Fort Tejon, the California Highway Patrol said.

Angelo Sebylano Jr., 64, of Hughson, Calif., near Modesto, died of injuries after his truck was hit by a rig driven by Paul Lee Schofield, 44, of Chino Hills, the CHP said.

Schofield was listed in good condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.

The CHP said Schofield had apparently fallen asleep while driving 60 m.p.h. northbound on the Golden State Freeway around 4 a.m.

His truck hit Sebylano’s, which had slowed for the approaching 35 m.p.h. truck speed limit. The collision caused Sebylano’s truck to overturn, spilling the cargo of 33 cows and bulls on the road. About 12 of the animals died, CHP Officer Mark Ealy said.

Three northbound lanes were closed and reopened a few hours later.
