Pro Surf Tour Considers Huntington Beach

Share

Officials with the Assn. of Surfing Professionals have listed Huntington Beach and Ventura as possible sites for the California Pro surfing championships, scheduled June 23-27.

The men’s and women’s event is listed as one of 12 stops on the ASP’s world championship tour’s tentative schedule.

Officials said the event’s future depends on whether it can find a sponsor to cover its $125,000 purse. They expect to decide this month.

The Op Pro championships, one of the tour’s 50 qualifying events, is scheduled for June 28-July 3 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Op dropped off the ASP world tour last season because its $80,000 purse was $40,000 shy of the amount required for a world-tour contest. The Op experimented with a team format last year, but several top pros skipped the event because it no longer offered individual points for the world tour.

The Op followed the individual format and was part of the ASP for 10 years.

Op’s purse for the qualifying event will be $60,000.
