Long Beach : City Proposes to Ban Bikes From Peninsula Boardwalk

Share

City officials have proposed banning bicycles from the boardwalk on the Alamitos Bay Peninsula, an upscale area in the southeast end of Long Beach.

City Council members, who called the wooden boardwalk a danger to both cyclists and pedestrians, asked the city attorney Tuesday to draft an ordinance to keep bikes off.

“The boardwalk is completely narrow,” Councilman Douglas Drummond said. “There’s no place to turn to avoid a collision.”

However, Mayor Ernie Kell said he used to live near the peninsula and did not recall any accidents there. “When I was a boy it was a nice experience to ride the boardwalk,” Kell said.

The council will consider the ordinance in coming weeks and plans to review the city’s other recreation areas to ensure safe conditions in time for warm weather.
