IRVINE : Lane Dividers to Be Installed on Street

Share

The city plans to install temporary plastic lane dividers on Deerfield in an attempt to slow traffic passing through the residential area.

The City Council authorized the flexible median posts Tuesday after more than 25 residents of the Windwood community asked the council to close Deerfield between Harvard Avenue and Culver Drive. Motorists are speeding past homes and a park along Deerfield, using the street as a shortcut to Culver, several residents said.

City transportation officials recommended keeping Deerfield open, however. Closing Deerfield has the potential of creating new problems by rerouting traffic to other streets, said Arya Rohani, Irvine’s manager of transportation services.

Two Windwood residents asked the council to keep the street open.

Rohani said the median posts along an L-shaped curve might work to slow vehicles traveling through the area. He said he will return to the council in three or four months to report on the success of the posts and recommend whether they should be made permanent.
