High Life: A Weekly Forum For High School Students : Spontaneity Is the Name of Game in Comedy Sportz

Five students take the stage, four with different expressions--one angry, one disappointed, one joyous, one puzzled--and the fifth kneels in front of them. The kneeling student raises his hand to the others, and one by one they let out a sound that expresses the feeling on their face.

This is one of the many games students from throughout the county played during Comedy Sportz recently in the Sunny Hills High School gymnasium.

Comedy Sportz is a nationwide workshop presented for drama students. It’s designed to help them become more at ease performing in front of an audience.

Participants get practice at improvisation by playing a variety of games with such titles as “Jams,” “Dr. Know It All” and “Environments.”

Student actors have no time to prepare for the roles they will play, and in most games the responses they must make are determined by what the people around them have just done.

“If you don’t like spontaneity, then you won’t like the workshop,” said Ilyana Marks, a sophomore at Sunny Hills.

Students who attended said the Comedy Sportz format is helpful and makes them feel more comfortable when they find themselves on the spot.
