*** Ted Rosenthal, “Calling You,” CTI. This pianist, known for his work with Gerry Mulligan, has an immaculate technique and a pristine sound, yet he manages to swing too. These seven selections, delivered by an all-star assemblage that in no way overshadows the leader, favor non-be-bop approaches. “Para los Papines” is one of four succulent, subtly Latin numbers and spotlights vibist Bobby Hutcherson and the singing soprano sax of Donald Harrison, who also sings the title tune--from the film “Bagdad Cafe.” “Groove Central” is a classy blues that allows guitarist Kevin Eubanks to shine.
