COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CCI Men Rally, Edge Point Loma Nazarene

Christ College Irvine rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Point Loma Nazarene, 64-63, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Point Loma Nazarene.

D’Andre Brown had 19 points and 14 rebounds and made 11 of 17 free throws for CCI (8-7). Guard Darren Lax had 11 points and eight assists and Agustin Heredia added 10 points for the Eagles. Julious Coleman scored 15 points for Point Loma Nazarene (7-10).

In another Golden State Athletic Conference game:

Southern California College 71, Cal Baptist 54--Tony Hyner had 17 points and Mike West added 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southern California College (10-7). Scott Campbell had 12 points and Danin Bryant had nine assists for the Vanguards.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Cal State Bakersfield 102, Chapman 81--Bakersfield (16-0, 4-0), the nation’s No. 1 ranked Division II team, steadily built its lead to take a 56-31 edge at halftime. Jeff Gardner scored 25 points and Vern Broadnax added 15 for Chapman (4-12, 1-3), but the Panthers committed 28 turnovers.

Five Bakersfield players scored in double figures, led by Reggie Phillips with 22.

Chapman guard Glen Greene, who started earlier in the season, sat out because he is academically ineligible.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

California Baptist 53, Southern California College 48--Jaime Zitterkopf led Southern California College (9-6) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

UC Irvine 115, Fresno State 90--Pat Keenan won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and also swam the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay for host Irvine (3-3). Gavin Cook (200 butterfly), Erik Walton (100 freestyle), and Rory Nomoto (400 individual medley) also won races for the Anteaters.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

Fresno State 126, UC Irvine 80--Laurel Hooper won the 1,000 freestyle and 400 individual medley for host Irvine. Also for the Anteaters, Danielle Bries won the 200 freestyle and Grace Moon won the 200 breaststroke.

At the Collegiate Classic men’s volleyball tournament in Santa Barbara:

Cal State Northridge 2, UC Irvine 0--Sophomore outside hitter Peter Piexoto had seven kills to lead Northridge to a 15-7, 15-13 victory in pool play.
