Giving Credit for Ahmanson

Share

Since the controversy seems to continue regarding Supervisor Maria VanderKolk’s honest, forthright and firm statement of position on the Ahmanson Ranch decision, I feel compelled to add my support for her position.

I did so admire her response to those critics who have such tunnel vision they couldn’t perceive what an outstanding compromise she’d helped craft. And that, of course, is the main job for the position to which she was elected--to represent everybody and make decisions.

Many of us have been less than pleased with the historical board’s ploy of doing everything possible to avoid making a decision on tough issues. Of particular concern is the habit of referring an issue back for more expensive studies. Now, they’re stuck with a whole series of toughies, because of past years’ procrastination.

This was the first time in ages I can remember a board member simply stating her well thought-out case and making no apologies. Bravo. I have prayed that the editorial response and public comment will help a few other timid souls become a touch more forthcoming. This, to my mind, is one of the major differences between a “politician” and a statesman.

I trust she will let this controversy cool down before she makes any determination on running again. I have the feeling that, once past this rough place, she’ll find she’s just beginning to hit her stride, and she’s certainly earning her stripes.
