MOORPARK : 2 Men Killed When Their Pickup Trucks Collide Head-On

Two men were killed when their pickup trucks collided head-on Monday on Grimes Canyon Road about a quarter of a mile north of California 118, authorities said.

No one witnessed the accident, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on a straight section of road that had dried almost completely from earlier rains, investigators said.

“The weather was not a factor at all in this,” said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jon West. “There were no visual impairments, like a temporary fog or a transient rainstorm. There wasn’t anything like that.”

West said that it appeared that a Chevrolet pickup truck headed south crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Ford pickup that was northbound. No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the accident, he said. Alcohol was not suspected as a factor in the crash, West said.

The wrecked Ford wound up on its side in a roadside drainage ditch flowing with rainwater. The Chevrolet came to rest facing north, flipped onto its top. “The impact was almost direct,” said Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Michael Lindberry.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Ventura County Deputy Coroner Dale Zentzis had to wait for firefighters to cut the victims out of the wreckage so he could make identifications.

Zentzis said preliminary information showed that the driver of the Chevrolet was a Canoga Park man in his early 30s and that the driver of the Ford was from Fillmore. He said both died of multiple traumatic injuries.
