AGOURA HILLS : Environmentalists File Ahmanson Suit

Share

The environmental group Save Open Space has filed the seventh legal challenge to stop the massive Ahmanson Ranch housing project, contending that the Ventura County Board of Supervisors erred when it approved the development in the Simi Hills.

The group, joined by the Woodland Hills Homeowners Organization and the Ventura County Environmental Coalition, filed its suit Tuesday in Ventura County Superior Court. It is the seventh group to challenge the 3,050-home project.

Last week, the cities of Calabasas, Malibu and Los Angeles as well as Los Angeles County and two homeowners groups filed suits to overturn the Ventura County board’s Dec. 15 approval of the project. Although the project will be built entirely within Ventura County, most of the adverse effects such as traffic will be felt most sharply in west Los Angeles County.

Save Open Space’s suit contends that the board did not follow proper procedure when it voted 4 to 1 in favor of the project and that Ventura County has not done enough to protect its undeveloped land. The suit also challenges the method through which the former sheep ranch was zoned.

Ahmanson Land Co. President Donald Brackenbush could not be reached for comment.
