FISHING / DAN STANTON : Weather Was Lousy, but Fishing Was Good

Last weekend’s rainy weather didn’t stop half-day boats from making trips, but deep-water rock cod and whale-watch boats remained in port.

The Rocky Point area produced the best action for Redondo Sport Fishing’s half-day boat, the Redondo Special.

Bob Nemecek of Redondo Sport Fishing said 32 anglers braved the poor weather and caught 80 calico bass, two white seabass and a yellowtail.

All landings are expected to schedule regular rock cod, seabass and whale-watch trips this week as the weather moderates.

Skiff fishermen Mike Goggin and Pat Conklin of Redondo Beach found excellent fishing Sunday in the kelp off Palos Verdes. They returned with five yellowtail and two white seabass that averaged 12 pounds.

Anglers using jigs and feathers were catching bonito and white seabass on the Redondo Pier and King Harbor wall.

Hoa Nguyen of Long Beach caught a limit of small bonito using cut bait and jigs.

Tom Garcia of Lomita, fishing off the breakwater wall, said he used cut squid to catch a small white seabass, which he released.

The 22nd Street Landing boat Indian, with 10 anglers aboard, returned last weekend from a 30-day trip to Mexican waters.

Capt. Frank Hall said the boat worked waters off Cabo San Lucas, Guadalupe, Cedros and San Martin. The weather and water temperature were above 70 degrees.

Fish caught on the trip included tuna, wahoo, dorado and yellowtail.

Several marlin were caught and released, with the average fish weighing more than 100 pounds.

Some catches of note included Bud Lovette with a 90-pound wahoo; Preston Dollar with a 100-pound wahoo; Frank Hall with a 40 1/2-pound yellowtail, and Tim and Josh Marquard, who each caught an 85-pound wahoo.

John Jordan, Roger Holwee and Kevin Duran caught tuna and dorado.

South Bay Sportfishing landings are offering whale-watching trips daily.

Los Angeles Sportfishing offers trips from Ports O’ Call aboard the 93-foot First String. Departures are at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

22nd Street Landing in San Pedro has departures at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. aboard the Islander.

South Bay catches: Scott Mellon of Lawndale, aboard the Redondo Special, caught a 28 1/2-pound white seabass out of the kelp at Rocky Point to earn whopper-of-the-week honors.

Brian Kenman of Long Beach, fishing at the rigs aboard the Phantom, caught a 10-pound yellowtail.

Freshwater notes: Anglers fishing Irvine Lake reported catches of rainbow trout.

Mike Robertson of Long Beach weighed in four trout that totaled 29 pounds.

Janice Stanley of Long Beach caught an 8-pound, 11-ounce trout.

Carson fisherman Garth Mildner and John Gobert caught their five-fish limits.
