LOS ANGELES : Brown Wants School, Union Officials to Meet

Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) said Thursday he wants opposing sides in the contract dispute between the Los Angeles school district and its teachers union to meet next week.

The Speaker, who was requested by both sides to serve as a strike mediator, has met with district and United Teachers-Los Angeles officials separately.

The teachers are scheduled to go on strike Feb. 23 as a result of rejecting the district’s latest contract offer, which includes a cumulative 12% pay cut.

“I do intend before the week is out next week to have them meeting together,” Brown said, adding that he has no settlement proposal to present.

“If I can get the two of them in one room, they may be able to solve it themselves,” Brown said.
