Fire officials in the Lake Tahoe area have issued a warning after six propane-fed explosions that killed four people and injured 16 more in the snowy Sierra Nevada in the last week.

Fire officials set up a hot line for residents who suspect faulty propane equipment and ordered that some tanks not be filled until gas pipes are cleared of heavy ice or accumulations of snow that can snap pipes and freeze regulators.

On the Nevada side of the lake, firefighters are going door to door to remind people to properly care for their propane tanks and gas lines.

Fire officials also are advising people to clear snow and ice from their propane tanks, pipes and regulators and to make sure that tanks are on solid slabs rather than rocks or logs so they will not shift from the weight of snow.
