Michael Jackson won two trophies and his third special award while Michael Bolton, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Reba McEntire, Patti LaBelle, Garth Brooks and Bobby Brown scored major victories Monday at the 20th annual American Music Awards.

Jackson “Dangerous” was voted the favorite pop rock album and “Remember the Time” was the favorite soul-rhythm and blues single. He has won 14 of the awards in competitive categories.

Jackson was presented a new honor, the International Artists Award, which in future years will also bear his name.

Cyrus accepted trophies for the favorite country single with “Achy Breaky Heart” and as the favorite new country artist.

American Music Awards nominations are based on industry record sales and airplay data, and winners are selected by the vote of a national sampling of record buyers. ABC-TV broadcast the awards show live.

Bolton was named favorite male pop-rock artist and favorite adult contemporary artist.

Carey won favorite pop-rock female artist, and her “Unplugged” recording was top adult contemporary album.

McEntire won favorite female country artist and favorite country album with “For My Broken Heart.”

In his only victory over Cyrus, Garth Brooks was named top male country artist. Bobby Brown won favorite male soul-R&B; artist. Patti LaBelle won favorite female soul-R&B; artist.

In a widely divergent field, Pearl Jam beat Arrested Development and TLC for favorite new pop-rock artist. The group also claimed favorite new artist honors in the heavy metal-hard rock competition.

Boyz II Men won favorite pop-rock single for “End of the Road” and most popular soul-rhythm and blues band, duo or group.

Young rappers Kris Kross won favorite new artist honors in the rap-hip hop and soul-rhythm and blues categories.

Alabama received its 16th career trophy as favorite country band. “Funky Divas” earned the soul-R&B; album award for the group En Vogue.

Metallica defeated Def Leppard and Red Hot Chili Peppers as favorite artist in the resurgent heavy metal-hard rock category.

Genesis scored a victory over Irish rockers U2 and Kris Kross for favorite pop-rock group. U2 was shut out entirely as its “Achtung Baby” lost to Jackson’s “Dangerous” as favorite pop-rock album.
